Recommended Novels

I love to read inspirational fiction—during breakfast, at stoplights, and at the playground while my girls are entertained. There’s nothing better than an entertaining novel that encourages and challenges the reader. Following are some of my favorite contemporary novels:

A Window to the World by Susan Meissner

Jen and Megan were in first grade when they met. Jen was an extrovert, filled with life. Megan was shy and reserved. Instant best friends, the girls were inseparable until the day that Jen disappeared. This beautifully written novel is about redemption and hope in the midst of tremendous pain.

The Awakening by Angela Elwell Hunt

Suicidal and suffering from agoraphobia, Aurora Norquest tries to break free from the power of her recently deceased mother who haunts her dreams. This modern day parable is about overcoming fear as Aurora searches for the courage to uncover the truth about her past.

Boo by Rene Gutteridge

Only someone as talented as Rene Gutteridge could create an entertaining, inspirational novel about a horror writer who becomes a Christian and then surround him with a hilarious cast of characters (I couldn't stop laughing!). Fortunately, Rene has followed this book up with Boo Who and Boo Hiss. All great reads.

The Justice by Angela Elwell Hunt

Angela Hunt's novel about a powerful woman president was written long before Geena Davis took office. Daryn Austin assumes the presidency in the first chapter and her story never stops moving. Enemies from all sides try to attack her, but the true enemy to her political career isn't an outside force. This is a well-written novel that's filled with surprises.

Beyond the Night by Marlo Schalesky

Marlo Schalesky created two characters that I cared deeply about and took me on a journey through the joys and heartbreaks in their relationship. The ending stunned me, and I closed the book with a smile. An incredible conclusion and a lasting reminder of the hope that is just beyond the night.

Kissing Adrian by Siri Mitchell

Unique, moving, irresistible, and inspiring-Siri Mitchell's debut novel is a treasure. You will leave your chair and travel to Paris with Claire Le Noyer, experiencing her transformation as she learns to enjoy beauty along with many of God's other gifts.

Lady of Milkweed Manor by Julie Klassen

This is a beautifully written novel about an unmarried pregnant woman in 19th-century England. Full of history and an unforgettable plot.

Margaret's Peace by Linda Hall

This gut-wrenching mystery demands instant attention as Margaret Collingwood returns home to escape the pain of her daughter's death. When she can't escape, she begins the long journey of healing as she uncovers the horrible secrets her own family buried when she was a girl.

My Soul to Keep

This Davis Bunn novel is about a small group of Christians trying to release a movie--a movie that Hollywood execs don't want released. An interesting inside look at Hollywood and a fast-paced read.

Quinlin's Estate by David Ryan Long

Dave Long takes the components of a predictable plot-old house, old mystery, an old treasure-and turns them upside down. With its extraordinary plotting and descriptive writing, Quinlin's Estate is about finding a treasure more valuable than gold.

The Restorer by Sharon Hinck

This book transports a burned-out soccer mom into another world, and she fights to overcome the emotional and spiritual attack on the People of the Verses. A fresh and intriguing story.

Secrets by Kristen Heitzmann

Kristen Heitzmann's romantic mystery is set in an old Sonoma villa. When Rese and Lance are thrown together to restore the rundown villa into a bed and breakfast, their secrets are slowly revealed. This is a beautifully written novel that I savored to the end.

When the Day of Evil Comes by Melanie Wells

Melanie Well's creepy debut novel delves into the spiritual battle warring for hearts and minds. The reluctant main character is thrust into this battle, and her journey is a wild ride of mystery, terror, and hope in Christ. You can read my full review of this well-written suspense here.

The Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson

When Jodi Baxter, a Christian "good girl," decides to join a prayer group of sinners saved by grace, she learns the true message of salvation. This novel is about revitalizing faith in Christ and appreciating the people God has brought into our lives.
